My name is Megan Goodling and today I worked my first shift in the makerspace. Mr. Little printed a little silver 3-D frog and explained the basic workings of the MakerBot. He talked about the different types of filaments and their prices. Khoa showed me an online database with various objects that can be 3-D printed, and I am looking forward to making my friend a phone case with her initials for her birthday. I would also like to design my own object on Tinkercad – I’m thinking maybe a patterned votive for a candle in my room. Khoa also showed me the VR equipment and set me up on VR Lab. I’ve only ever used a significantly more limited VR set before, so it was a super cool experience. I started out in an all white room and I felt like I’d been transported to another universe – it was crazy. Then Khoa let me shoot people with a bow and arrow to defend my castle; I feel like the CIA probably uses something like this to train its agents – this simulation was probably my favorite part. We also explored a cave and the top of a mountain. At first I was terrified to walk to the edge of the cliff, but then I walked over the edge and was kind of on top of the air so I could convince myself it wasn’t real. I want to find a simulation where a dinosaur or monster is running straight at me to see if I have any biological reactions – increased heart rate, blood pressure etc. I’d be very interested to do some research on that aspect of VR. While I appreciate these cool and fancy innovations in technology, I am definitely seeking to learn how they can be applied to society to improve quality of life.
